Provincial Kids of Steel Championships... This triathlon is a unique opportunity for our local athletes. They have the ability to know the pool, bike and run course quite well. Being able to get out and train on the actual course gives the local athlete a home field advantage, so to speak. Our four local schools, St. Martin's, A.L. Horton, St. Mary's and the Composite High school have strong school spirit and are full of potential kids willing to come and participate. With the local track season fast approaching it is our hope that by extending the deadline some of these local athletes will step up and choose to compete in the triathlon and show a high level of community spirit.
The top finisher in each age group will be designated as the 2010 Alberta Kids of Steel Provincial Champions. Gold, silver and bronze provincial awards will be given out in each category. In addition, the top 2 male and female finishers in each age group have the opportunity to represent Alberta at the Kids of Steel Western Championships in Kelowna on August 22, 2010.
Volunteers Are Required...
As with any major event, this triathlon event cannot take place without the help of local volunteers. The triathlon requires volunteers for the race day event for about 4.5 hours up to noon on the Saturday. Various positions can be volunteered for. They include such things as athlete body marking of race numbers, pool lane counting, setting up of prize tables and BBQ helpers. Keeping the children safe while they are biking and running on the roads on Vegreville is a key concern. Certain roads are closed to vehicle traffic the day of the race and we require individuals to help with this protection. Of course no event can be done without all those people who come out and cheer on the athletes during the race. If any of these volunteer positions sound like something you would like to help with, please contact the Triathlon Race Director, Dan, at his home number of 780-632-5287 or by email at fisherdc@telus.net. We appreciate everyone who can help make this event a success. |
Friendly Visiting Program... The Friendly Visiting program is designed to match a Friendly Visitor volunteer with a senior in need of friendship and socialization. Visits vary from 1 to 2 hours a week and may include activities such as: playing board games, cards or visiting over a cup of coffee or tea. Both visitors and seniors are screened and asked for references prior to participating in the program. If you are interested in this fulfilling volunteer opportunity or know of someone who would benefit from Friendly Visits please call Melanie at FCSS at 780-632-3966.
